Background of the Study:
Climate change poses a significant threat to agricultural activities, particularly in regions dependent on rain-fed farming. In Abakaliki, unpredictable weather patterns, prolonged droughts, and increased incidences of flooding have disrupted agricultural production (Nwosu, 2023). These climatic changes not only reduce crop yields but also affect food security and rural livelihoods (Chukwu, 2024). Farmers are increasingly forced to adopt adaptive practices, such as crop diversification and improved irrigation systems, to mitigate these impacts (Okeke, 2025). Nonetheless, the cost of adaptation and limited access to climate information pose challenges to effective agricultural management. This study explores the effects of climate change on agricultural activities, investigating how farmers adapt to changing conditions and what interventions can enhance resilience in Abakaliki (Uche, 2023).
Statement of the Problem:
Agricultural productivity in Abakaliki is severely impacted by climate change, leading to reduced yields and food insecurity. Inadequate adaptation strategies and limited access to resources further exacerbate these challenges, highlighting the need for targeted interventions to support farmers in coping with climatic variations (Ifeanyi, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To examine the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity.
To identify adaptation strategies employed by farmers.
To propose recommendations for enhancing agricultural resilience.
Research Questions:
How does climate change affect agricultural productivity in Abakaliki?
What adaptation strategies are currently used by farmers?
What measures can improve agricultural resilience?
Research Hypotheses:
Climate change negatively impacts agricultural productivity.
Limited adaptation strategies exacerbate the negative effects of climate change.
Enhanced support services can improve agricultural resilience.
Significance of the Study:
This study is significant as it provides insights into the adverse effects of climate change on agriculture and offers recommendations for sustainable adaptation strategies, thereby ensuring food security and improved livelihoods in Abakaliki (Chinwe, 2023).
Scope and Limitations of the Study:
Limited to the topic only.
Definitions of Terms:
Climate Change: Long-term changes in temperature and weather patterns.
Agricultural Productivity: The efficiency of crop production.
Adaptation Strategies: Measures adopted to mitigate adverse climatic impacts.
